When I became a facilities director in 1997 right out of the military, I was looking for resources to help me perform my job better. I took some classes through Building Owners Management Association (BOMA) that were useful, but not specific to schools.
Lake Shore Public Schools started fostering a relationship with a school in Beijing, China in 2005. The program started out with having middle school students make two-week exchange trips. Within five years, 88 Chinese 11th grade students started attending Lake Shore High School for entire year.
The transportation department, in many school districts, receives more parent concerns on a daily basis, than all the other district departments combined.
When I joined MSBO in 1993, I recall being completely in awe of the leadership shown by the MSBO board and staff. My goal was to become a board member, and hopefully serve as president. I wanted to take the things I learned along the way to improve my district’s ability to educate our children.
As most of us know the year isn’t winding down it’s actually heating up and that’s not just the temperature. We are scrambling to complete our budgets. It’s audit time. And for many of us negotiations continue or are beginning in earnest.
